Kanye West is an aficionado of over the top 80s and 90s hoops styles, and his Nike collaborations reflected that louder, more conspicuous sartorial sensibility. Conversely (pun gleefully intended), Wiz Khalifa generally tends toward the more classic, understated fashions, such as Chuck Taylors. (Generally. No, his closet is not bereft of Air Jordans.) As such, Wiz’s new collab with a Nike subsidiary is the polar opposite of Ye’s previous Swoosh shoes: independent of trends, utterly timeless. Introducing the Wiz Khalifa x Converse All Star ILL.
Coming in two colorways — black/gum and white/white — the shoe sports an understated premium leather upper with tonal debossed Chuck Taylor logo in the usual placement, and the familiar Chuck toecap, also rendered tonally. The leather build lends the shoe a slightly thicker, more substantial silhouette, while the midtop cut makes it a viable option with pants or shorts. (Or capri pants, I s’pose; Wiz would do that.)
The “Converse Chuck Taylor All Star ILL collection by Wiz Khalifa” will release at Foot Locker, Footaction and Eastbay on August 22, retailing for $70 apiece.
