According to Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan XXX took less than a year to design. Tinker began design sketches on the shoe in February 2015 at the request of Michael Jordan, with the finished product being officially unveiled in January of 2016. The Air Jordan 31 and 32 will not be nearly as rushed.
In fact, as Tinker told Sports Illustrated in a recent interview, the Air Jordan 31 is already completed, and design for the Air Jordan 32 has begun, much of its design being informed by the technology, construction and philosophy behind those two predecessors.
Says Tinker: “Having completed [the Air Jordan XXX], in many ways, is really one of the first steps for those next shoes. There needs to be some consistency as a brand, as an image, kind of stylistically. You wouldn’t want to take a Jordan shoe and be inspired by, say, a LeBron shoe. It just wouldn’t have the same consistency for Jordan Brand.”
But why take my word for it? Check out the full interview in the video below, and hear it straight from the design legend’s mouth. And stay tuned for more on the Air Jordan 31; should only be a year or so.
