Iconic athletes don’t merely dominate their sport, they inspire a new generation to strive to achieve that same status; that same place in history. Rarely has that been better illustrated than in the new short film from Nike Golf, Ripple.
Just as Jack Nicklaus was the idol of Tiger Woods growing up, Tiger was that same mythic figure to a young Rory McIlroy. Ripple follows Rory through his formative years as he first picks up the passion for golf, forever driving and motivating himself to become better by watching the successes of Tiger, the nuances of his game — what it takes to be great.
It’s been an incredible journey for me, going from massive fan to competitor. To think that not too long ago I was that little boy watching him on TV to where I am now. It’s been a cool journey and I’m very lucky I get to compete with and against him, because he inspired me as a kid and he inspires me now. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen.
Ripple then closes with Tiger and Rory finally facing off against one another in competition, before walking down the fairway side by side, with plenty of room next to them for the next generation of greatness.
