Well, it’s October 21, 2015; the day to which Marty McFly traveled ahead in Back to the Future Part II. It’s long been assumed that Nike would launch that movie’s greatest sneaker today — the Nike Mag, complete with auto-lacing technology. That thinking was seemingly confirmed earlier this year, when it was announced that Tinker Hatfield and his team were working on the tech, and in fact already had a patent or two on the books. So: Nike Mag in 2015?
Well, the day’s not over yet, but it looks like you’ll have to wait another year. Earlier today, Michael J. Fox, star of the Back to the Future trilogy, shared a handwritten note from Tinker Hatfield indicating three things.
One: The Nike Mag with auto-lacing tech already exists and is on its way to Fox, who will be the first owner.
Two: The Nike Mag with auto-lacing tech will indeed see a public release, perhaps by way of an auction like the 2011 pair. Proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Three, and here’s the tragic one: Barring some time travel trickery, or Tinker absolutely Kelly Ripa-ing the hell out of us, it looks like the auto-lacing Nike Mag release will not take place until 2016.
It’s still a wildly exciting development, just one that’s still off on the horizon; at least two and a half months, anyway. Stay tuned for updates, very possibly later today, but certainly as 2016 approaches.
