An absolutely singular style in the annals of footwear design, the Nike Zvezdochka is returning to retailers.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, and following a return engagement in 2010, the famous slip-on shoe will once more hit retailers on December 29 looking completely faithful to its original game-changing design.
The Zvezdochka was engineered as a collaborative project between Nike and industrial designer Marc Newson, who drew on his wealth of experience with the Russian Space Agency for the unique model. In fact, in creating the singular silhouette, Newson was driven by the idea of creating a multi-purpose shoe that would be suitable for cosmonauts.
Designed entirely on a computer, the resulting Zvezdochka, named for a dog that was launched into Orbit aboard Sputnik 10 in 1961, completely shattered the mold in terms of traditional design. Four interlocking interchangeable parts comprise the shoe: an outer cage, interlocked outsole, inner-sleeve and Zoom Air-cushioned insole. Those pieces make up a system that can be worn in any combination, yielding a different fit and feel based on which pieces are present.
And the classic of modern design is on its way back. The Nike Zvezdochka release date is set for December 29, the shoe being stocked at select NikeLab destinations and Nike.com/NikeLab.
