Well, yesterday, October 21, 2015, was “Back to the Future Day,” the day that Marty McFly traveled forward to in Back to the Future Part II. It was long assumed that that was the date the power-lacing Nike Mag — a shoe debuted in the film — would finally see a retail release, but it came and went without a launch coming to fruition. (Unless you’re Michael J. Fox.) But the shoe is coming. . . .
In fact, as evidenced by Fox’s pair, Nike has already created the first auto-lacing Nike Mag, just like the pair in the movie. According to the Swoosh:
This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration.
Nike continues to test this technology across multiple sports, incorporating feedback into future game-changing footwear with unprecedented performance features that have the potential to impact athletes around the world.
And the power-lacing Nike Mag will indeed release soon. Sort of. It will be available exclusively via auction, with all proceeds benefitting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Stay tuned for auction details and information as spring of 2016 approaches.
