Johnny Manziel is the latest high-profile athlete to test the patience of Nike. The Swoosh has officially dropped the embattled quarterback from his endorsement contract, reports Darren Rovell, putting him in the exclusive club of defrocked Nike endorsers from the last few years that includes Manny Pacquiao, Oscar Pistorius, Ray Rice and Lance Armstrong.
Manziel is currently being investigated both by a Dallas grand jury and the NFL’s player conduct committee, stemming from allegations he assaulted his ex-girlfriend. Additionally, he’s currently a free agent, and it’s unclear if he’ll actually play for an NFL team this year — sort of a point of focus for Nike when it comes to its pro football endorsers.
While the abovementioned investigations have recently cast an even stronger light on his embarrassing off-field behavior, Manziel, who was signed to a multi-year deal in March 2014, was actually dropped by Nike earlier in the year; sometime following the end of the NFL season, according to Rovell.
