Did you know that Nike made a shoe for the cast and crew of the television series Friends?
Love it or hate it — cards on the table . . . I’m in the former group — Friends is an iconic show, a slice of mid-90s American life and culture. The Nike Air Edge, meanwhile, doesn’t remotely boast the same iconic status, but it’s nearly as quintessentially mid-90s from a design standpoint, owing to its bulky silhouette and busy paneling that just screams “Chandler’s freaking vests!” So why not combine the two?
That’s exactly what Nike did, creating special Friends-branded editions of the shoe for the cast and crew’s second season on set in 1995. The series’ famous wordmark adorns each heel, and the tongues read “2nd Season” in that same font. Aesthetically, from the branding to the sartorial sensibilities of the era, this marriage of shoe and inspiration really is the perfect fit.
