In a 1999 playoff match at Wembley, Manchester City was down 2-0 to Gillingham FC with only injury time left to play. Man City not only managed to tie the match, but went on to win 3-1 in the following penalty shootout. That historic comeback inspires the team’s new third kit for the 2015-16 campaign.
Dubbed “Night Rising,” the new Manchester City third kit borrows the green trim from the ’99 team’s yellow-and-black shirt and applies it in a fluorescent shade throughout the new jersey and shorts.
That conspicuous green fades to gradient black at the cuffs and knees, an effect that accentuates players’ physical presence under the floodlights of night matches, while also matching up to the stripes that run down each side through the shorts. Finally, a modernized Man City crest appears at left-chest, sticking with the black-and-green palette.
Man City debuts its new third kit on-pitch September 22, when the club visits Sunderland AFC. The shirt will be available at select retailers beginning October 1.
