Nike’s most prominent boxer, maybe ever, fights this weekend, so you know Nike Boxing will be going all out with the special edition gear. Manny Pacquiao faces off with Juan Manuel Marquez for a third time on November 12th (first time north of 130 though, which will definitely make a difference). Since you’re reading this blog, I’m assuming that, if you plan on watching, you’re rooting for Manny. So why not do it in a new Nike Manny Pacquiao t-shirt, to go with those new Pacquiao shoes? I love boxing and respect the hell out of Manny Pacquiao, so you can imagine my interest when I got word of his new boot. eBay now finds itself as the sole location where you can buy the ’til now-unseen Nike Manny Pacquiao Boxing Boot 2010, created specifically for Manny (and in his size) for his upcoming fight with Antonio “Hands of Stone” (literally) Margarito. The boot features a beautiful varsity royal/white-varsity red colorway and sports Pacquiao markings in various spots around the upper, including his logo on the ankle and tongue. Manny Pacquiao seems to really benefit from being the only boxer signed with the Swoosh, as the undivided attention he gets has resulted in yet another Pacquiao-specific product, the Nike Trainer SC 2010 Manny Pacquiao PE. Add one more thing to your list of what to be thankful for this year: Negotiations for a megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, widely considered the top two pound-for-pound boxers in the world, are officially underway. Pacquiao is coming off a 12th-round technical knockout of Miguel Cotto, a fight which sold 1.25 million pay-per-views, while Mayweather trounced Juan Manuel Marquez in a lopsided unanimous decision this past September that sold 1.05 million units. Mayweather’s victory reestablished him as a top fighter in the world after a short retirement, while Pacquiao’s earned him an unprecedented seventh title in as many weight classes, the first fighter in the history of the sport to achieve the feat. The prospective clash between the two fighters, which is being negotiated by Top Rank’s Bob Arum for Pacquiao and Golden Boy’s Richard Schaeffer for Mayweather and targeted for early 2010, would be expected to threaten most pay-per-view and revenue records.

Check out the “Wapakman” trailer, “Wapakman” of coursing being a Filipino movie starring none other than Manny Pacquiao and apparently co-starring Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls. The movie appears to combine several superhero/sci-fi conventions including Manny fighting a Lava-Man and a giant crab. And I think something somewhat Ghostbusters-like was in there as well. Anyway, looks ridiculous. It comes out Christmas Day in the Philippines.

Coming off a masterful late-round dismantling of Miguel Cotto this past Saturday night, I figured I’d write something about Manny Pacquiao, Nike’s only non-Jordan Brand boxer. So after my search for Manny-related Nike products I’ve never written about, here’s what I found: now available on NikeStore.com, a different “Pac Man Knows” shirt than what we’ve been used to, this one sporting the silhouette of Pacquiao’s dog, Pac Man, over the “P” on the shirt. Arturo Gatti vs Carlos Baldomir Fight Poster

Former boxer Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, 40-9 with 31 KO’s, was found dead in a hotel room in Brazil, according to reports out of Sao Paulo today. Gatti, best known for his brutal, come-forward style, was in Brazil for a second honeymoon with his wife and one year-old son; He was found dead early Saturday morning, but police say he could have been killed up to eight hours prior. The two-weight-division champion was 37 years old and, while the investigation is ongoing, foul play is suspected. (It’s South America, I’m pretty sure that’s always a safe bet.)

While not always the most technical fighter, Arturo Gatti was one of the most exciting fighers of his generation and always a fan-favorite due to his crowd-pleasing style and tremendous heart. Despite being born in Italy and raised in Canada, he became one of Atlantic City’s adopted sons, fighting many of his biggest fights there, including the last nine of his career at Boardwalk Hall. Perhaps best known for his bloody trilogy with “Irish” Micky Ward, Gatti fought four times in a Ring Magazine “Fight of the Year,” including twice against Ward. NikeBlog.com finds this to be an unspeakable tragedy and hopes everyone will keep the Gatti family in their thoughts.

The much-anticipated showdown between David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko scheduled for June 20th is off according to an ESPN report, with David Haye withdrawing from the bout due to a hand injury. This is a disastrous turn of events for a division desperately needing it’s biggest fight since Lennox Lewis retired. David Haye of England is widely believed to be the biggest threat to the Klitschko Brothers’ stranglehold over the heavyweight division, however due to the quick sell-out of the event, it’s very possible that Klitschko could face a fill-in opponent on June 20th, casting doubt on a possible rescheduling of the fight.

Wladimir Klitschko holds the WBO and IBF heavyweight belts. David Haye is the former WBA and WBC cruiserweight champion, having vacated his belts to campaign at heavyweight.

This is the second heavyweight championship bout to fall apart over the last week. The Ruslan Chagaev-Nikolai Valuev were scheduled to fight Saturday, May 30 for the WBA belt but the bout was called off in the 11th hour.

Nintendo has some new Punch Out commercials wherein Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi plays the protagonist of the “Punch Out” series, Little Mac. His trainer, Doc, is played by Isiah Whitlock Jr of “The Wire” fame. Apparently Little Mac lost his belt to King Hippo 15 years ago and he’s hard at work trying to get it back. I presume that his comeback coincides with the release of the game, which I suppose is in the next month or two. Holla.

As ideally everyone should know, Saturday May 2nd marks the superfight between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and junior welterweight king/Ring Champion Ricky Hatton, arguably the biggest fight of 2009. (until Floyd comes back and, hopefully, fights the winner.) I’m an avid Pac fan, but I’m also a big fan of boxing-related music, such as the Unstoppable, Undroppable, Mr Unknockoutable Roy Jones Jr (until Antonio Tarver disproved all of those theories).

While Manny Pacquiao probably isn’t much of a rapper, one bay area hip hop duo has taken care of that part for him; introducing the Trackrunners’ “Pound for Pound,” a Pacquiao-inspired joint. The song is already starting to make waves, having been played over the PA system at AT&T Park when Pacman threw out the first pitch for the Giants. And now word comes from Rei Tracks (half of the Trackrunners) that “Pound for Pound” is to be played on the final episode of Pacquiao/Hatton 24/7 (greatest show on television). With purveying rumors that Pacquiao is bumping the song during training, you could very well be getting a sneak preview of Manny Pacquiao’s ring entry song. Enjoy the music.
