Standing in stark contrast to the understated all-white style that is the home uniform, the new US Soccer kit for away matches was introduced today, a bold, striking mix of America’s national colors that pairs performance innovation with aesthetics that play up the nation’s passionate patriotism.
The new away shirt sports an overall look directly inspired by the American flag, with three bands capturing each tone on the national symbol: royal blue covering the shoulders; white stripe that extends all the way to the sleeves; red throughout the rest of the body. The result is variegated mix of colors that sharply juxtapose one another as they commingle, but in an organized pattern that succeeds without overloading the eye.
Inside the back of the collar a pennant tab appears, housing 13 red-and-white stripes. As on the flag, the stripes are an homage to the colonies that declared independence and become the first 13 states. Wearable history never looked so good.
Shifting to the back of the shirt, designers created a special custom font for the names and numbers. The modern, angular script is inspired by that of US sports teams, and each number features a small US Soccer crest in the bottom.
Finally, the shirt will be paired with red shorts, creating a sort of gradient effect as the jersey shifts from blue to white to red and then into the shorts. That shift is maintained through the red socks.
While the USMNT will don the new US Soccer kits throughout this summer’s World Cup, you need not wait until then to get your hands on one. The kits are available on Nike.com and at select stores beginning today, April 1.
