Ayden Uhlir First Equestrian Athlete to Sign with Nike

Eighteen-year-old dressage rider Ayden Uhlir may not have the name recognition of LeBron James, nor play in as high-profile a league as James’s NBA, but she’s making history in her own way.

The gold medalist in both the 2013 North American Young Riders Championships and USEF Young Rider National Championships recently agreed to an endorsement deal with Nike, according to Dressage Daily, making her the first US Equestrian rider ever signed by the brand.

It’s an interesting move for the Swoosh, testing what’s effectively an untapped market for the larger sportswear companies, at least on an individual-athlete basis. Clearly Nike either sees tremendous potential for popularity-growth from the equestrian category or from Ms. Uhlir herself.
