The influence that Phil Knight and Nike have had on the current landscape of advertising can scarcely be overstated. In addition to turning out some of the most memorable ads of the last few decades — thanks in no small part to a partnership with the brand’s longtime ad agency Wieden + Kennedy — Nike has truly had a lasting impact on certain elements of the industry, such as paying top dollar for athletes spokespeople and pioneering nontraditional marketing methods. (Footing the bill for Michael Jordan’s “banned” Air Jordan 1s, for example.)
For all those reasons and more, the Nike chairman was recently inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame, after which he sat down with Ad Age to talk about how he wound up there. So now, without further ado, Phil Knight talks about the history of Nike advertising. Enjoy.
