What are the Ducks Wearing Saturday? (USC Edition)

Oregon Ducks Football Uniforms vs USC

It’s that time of the week again, time when the college football weekend is in sight and we get to start talking about what Oregon Ducks uniforms we’ll see on Saturday. I guess this should have been obvious from the get-go, but it’s becoming pretty clear that the Ducks won’t wear the same uniform twice this season. Again label this as “rumor,” but I’ll arrogantly point out that I’ve been doing this since the Cal game and have been right all four times. Also, I’ve heard this rumor from two different sources, so I’m pretty confident. Anyway, this weekend the Oregon Ducks uniforms against USC will be … the debut of the carbon fiber helmets, black jersey, and “steel” pants. So sick, I absolutely cannot wait for this outfit. And I’ll go on the record with a prediction: 35-13 Oregon, on the strength of the Ducks secondary making Barkley look average. And check out past predictions here or the create-your-own-uniform generator here.

UPDATE: So Rob Moseley of the Register Guard confirmed that the Ducks wore their standard helmets in practice today. While this doesn’t mean they will wear any specific helmet on Saturday it–combined with the fact that the carbon helmets are rumored to be behind schedule and the team likely will not wear a helmet in the game that they’ve never practiced in before–does cast doubt on whether they’ll actually wear the carbon hats on Saturday. As such I’ll include the two most prevalent rumors below, the green helmet/green shirt/black pants and the blackout (which I don’t think will happen but it is Halloween, so who knows). I actually still think they’ll wear the carbon helmets, but we’ll see.

UPDATE x2: So yeah … green/green/black it was. I sort of called it.

A night game with rain and maybe some fog might make it hard to see the players from high in the stadium. I think the combo will look good on TV though.

  • 2 flyduckfly // Oct 29, 2009 at 11:37 am

I called it! I knew they would be waiting for a huge game to break out the new carbon gear. Going to look sweet!

  • 3 Rob // Oct 29, 2009 at 11:38 am

I like the all black. Like the Arizona game last year. But I guess that is why they won’t do it. Barring that, I would like all black and carbon helmet.

  • 4 j541 // Oct 29, 2009 at 11:45 am

You’re wrong. Was supposed to be. It’s green helmets and shirts with black pants.

  • 5 just me // Oct 29, 2009 at 11:58 am

What did we do, revamp some old Oakland Raiders uniforms? DUDE – our colors are GREEN and YELLOW. Black belongs to the Beavs.

  • 6 Len Casanova // Oct 29, 2009 at 12:24 pm

Beginning to look like the Oakland Raiders. Just as long as they don’t play like Raiders — please.
Bring back those classic unis from the Cal game.

  • 7 Geoff // Oct 29, 2009 at 1:10 pm

I heard this as well, then heard that Chip was leaning Green hat, Green jersey, Black pants… and Casey was pushing for what you’ve got up there.

I’m down for either, I think they’ll both look great!

BTW, do you mean they won’t have the same uni combo throughout the year or won’t use the same jersey? Because they’ll have to use the same Jersey next game as they’ve already used, white-green trim, white-grey trim, green, throw-back, yellow and now black.

  • 8 duckfan // Oct 29, 2009 at 1:32 pm

this is DUMB. all black should have been the plan… damn oregon screwin with the plan already.

  • 9 oregon111 // Oct 29, 2009 at 2:04 pm

“it’s becoming pretty clear that the Ducks won’t wear the same jersey twice this season”

gonna be tough to hold up on that theory – they have to wear white to away games

but i like this look for a big night game on national tv – just hope they dont play like the raiders

@Oregon111: Yeah I meant uniforms. This makes my math skills look very poor.

  • 11 Sir Lucas Leftfoot // Oct 29, 2009 at 2:20 pm

@Geoff: Yeah I did mean uniform, in fact we’ve worn the same jersey twice on two occasions: green-with-silver against Utah and Purdue, and white-with-green against Boise and UCLA.

  • 12 greenthumb // Oct 29, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Why can’t the fans wear black?

  • 13 Sir Lucas Leftfoot // Oct 29, 2009 at 2:29 pm

@greenthumb: There was a rumor that the athletic department was planning an official blackout in concert with the team wearing all black. The athletic department has since dispelled that rumor and in fact encouraged fans to wear yellow because it will show up well in the dark on tv. That being said, there are any number of student campaigns and facebook groups encouraging a fan blackout so if you’re down by all means … do it.

i’m going to be in black, what –we gonna get thrown out for black?? ha,ha, go ducks

  • 15 UOfootball // Oct 29, 2009 at 2:40 pm

I am sorry but the “steel” pants look like every MLB road uniform pants. They should toss those and bring back the yellow pants. The game against ASU in 2007 with the dark tops and the yellow pants looked alot better.

WEAK…. Should be ALL black for Halloween night. That’s a no-brainer!

  • 18 idahoduck // Oct 29, 2009 at 3:36 pm

players have been telling the students to wear all black to the game because they are wearing all black

Somebody has a short memory as to what has happened in the past when the students wanted the ‘blackout’ and it took on serious racial overtones and the night was not pleasant.

We have already had our embarrassed behavior for the year…why even come close to some more? Black..especially on a rainy/foggy night is about as dull, lethargic, and non-exciting
as it could be. Yellow shows up well in person or on TV. For a National audience, I think we
need to show OUR colors…in our attire AND
the way the game is played. That would be
    Green and Yellow.

  • 20 LawDuck // Oct 29, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Some years ago (not too many) Oregon came out for warmups in one uniform, then changed before coming our for the game into some other, more cool uniform. Wish I could remember when and what the uniform was.

Anyhow, if there is any institutional memory there, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the same thing on Saturday – they’ll come out in one color for warmups and all black for the game. Fans will go nuts.

Also, no chance of carbon helmets. Oregon never, ever, ever wears a new helmet without practicing in it for a few days. Doing so is a recipe for disaster.

  • 21 Dazy Duck // Oct 29, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Idaho duck: Your statement is 100-% false.

The suggested uniform combination in the picture above resembles a prison work yard
    uniform. Dull and Boring….

We need to use that Retro at least once more.
Players loved it, Alums loved it, looked great on TV…..

  • 22 Sir Lucas Leftfoot // Oct 29, 2009 at 7:00 pm

@Law Duck: Not 100% but I’m thinking that was the foggy Civil War game. And unfortunately I kind of agree with you re: the helmet situation.

  • 23 idahoduck // Oct 29, 2009 at 7:04 pm

alright… i understand that you don’t believe me, and i respect your opinion. all i am saying is that the players themselves have come out and said to all the students that they are wearing the all black uniforms

  • 24 Rook1 // Oct 30, 2009 at 7:32 am

Not sure about that LawDuck. The helmets were completed and assembled in a rush late last week. Is it possible that they practiced with them already? Don’t know…I don’t live in Eugene.

  • 25 Nike zoknik // Oct 30, 2009 at 8:43 am

    Nice blog.

i like Nike and players too.

  • 26 Sir Lucas Leftfoot // Oct 30, 2009 at 11:09 am

@Rook1: the same information regarding the helmets was just confirmed to me, and it was reaffirmed that silver/black/silver is what we’ll be wearing. Take that for what it’s worth.

  • 27 LawDuck // Oct 30, 2009 at 3:12 pm

@Rook1 – No. Rob Mosely at the Register-Guard reports each week on what helmets are being worn in practice. They’ve never worn the carbon helmets.

The reason for rule of not wearing a helmet without first practicing in it is the need to make sure they fit right. Game time is the wrong time to discover your helmet doesn’t fit right.

  • 28 Rook1 // Oct 30, 2009 at 4:02 pm

@LawDuck – I guess that would make a ton sense. Its too bad though, I would love to see them bad boys in action. I guess I still get the opportunity to see our Ducks fight hard against them SC boys. Have fun at the game guys and go ducks! (whatever helmets they may be wearing)

  • 29 Blake B. // Oct 31, 2009 at 10:08 am

How can you think those uniforms are attractive, they are absolutely hideous. Nike, you are just embarrassing yourself with this garbage. Come on Phil, you’re better than that…

  • 30 Micky S. // Oct 31, 2009 at 1:46 pm

The carbon pants are the worst I have ever seen.
They are about as bad as the puke yellow helmets of the past. Let’s go with the all black or
the same uni as was worn against WSU.

  • 31 Glenn H // Nov 22, 2009 at 5:15 am

I love the carbon pants… but only when worn with the carbon helmet and white jersey, otherwise it doesn’t look good.

  • 32 OC Duck // Nov 23, 2009 at 6:23 pm

Best uni is carbon pants, yellow jersey, and carbon helmet.
