Pacquiao-Hatton fight on verge of collapse

January 21st, 2009 · 1 Comment

The superfight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton tentatively scheduled for May 2nd is likely off. Despite coming to a verbal agreement on location, near 50/50 split, and even shared promotional rights, it is appearing more and more as if the fight will not occur. Allegedly the Hatton camp is waiting for a signed contract that Pacquiao is unwilling to provide. Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Hatton’s promotional representatives, has implied that if he does not receive a signed agreement from Pacquiao by early Wednesday morning, he’ll seek other fights for Hatton.

Possible bouts include a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, Jr (which would accomplish nothing save getting both guys richer and putting another “L” onto Hatton’s record), Oscar De La Hoya (does that really need to happen? Why are we to think it would go any different than Pacquiao-Oscar did?), or the winner of the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz fight (that’ll be Marquez, and this is definitely the best prospective fight of the bunch and the one most worth a $50 PPV). Really don’t have any idea what Pacquiao would do if he’s going to balk out of the biggest fight that can be made. Could he conceivably have Mayweather’s ear about a possible matchup at a just-south-of-welter catchweight? If not, then what’s the impetus to pass on the biggest fight in boxing? We’ll find out soon enough, as the official word on Pacquiao-Hatton should come within days, if not hours.
